ASK 008 Berry Creamy

ASK 008 - Berry Creamy. ASK was a short-lived collaboration between Arrow Springs and Kugler glass. There is still some of it floating around.

I had seen some samples of Berry Creamy floating around that were a deep, rich purple, and so I decided to try some.


















And I got this. Meh - like a dark violet with a lot of livering. Meh. 

 

It was so far off the colour I was expecting that I decided to try again. And got very different results. 

 It was not actually my intention to make a purple horse - I figured that the livered violet would make a decent dun colour, but most of the livering - the brownish areas, is restricted to areas that are in the valleys and folds. The rest is a fairly nice, bright purple.

 Raku (mostly) frit on the back.

I think this tells me something about some purples and the length of heating time. Frustrating if what you are trying to do is whack off a bunch of spacers

This is what he looked like just before going into the kiln. You can't really tell what colour he will be. Even the shading is different.

You can get the purple out of this colour - but it's going to take some time. And heat.

Effetre 767 Blueberry Raspberry

Well, well, well. Sometimes, you just have to say - isn't that interesting.


 The quarter pound package contained mostly light coloured, whitish, rods, and one kind of pinkish. This was typical of all the packages.

 And the results?

It really did go blue, a pale turquoise that developed a light metallic layer - in the flame. That was a surprise - it does not look blue at all.

 You can see it on the back of the big bead too. Initially, as I was working it, I could get it to go away with heating, but as I worked, it became persistent.

The odd rod out - the pink/red rod - I used for the horse himself, and ... the difference is quite dramatic. When it was molten and I was laying it down, it had a lot of transparent in it. Much more so than the light rods.

(That's a bit of frit around his face for contrast.)

Over all - this glass is a puzzler. The light rods went light turquoise. The red rod when streaky pink and blue. The pink rod really lives up to the name Blueberry Raspberry - the light rods - are less variable.

CiM 824 Pachyderm

Another take on CiM Pachyderm - a multi-shaded warm grey.

I know this shot of the ends of the rods is out of focus, but I burned myself taking it, so you can look at it at least. Plus, the info we want, that it has rings like Saturn, is there.















The first bead - the bead release died on me, and it was spinning around on the mandrel, and while I could build a bridge, I have to say - it was just easier to start again.

So I grabbed some Effetre dark grey - didn't note which one, just some similarly shaded dark grey for the core of the next bead, which I then encased in Pachyderm, and noted this. The Effetre grey, melts and goes down the way you expect, but the pachyderm goes almost white when you melt it, and then blushes back to it's colour. It was quite easy to tell where I was encasing and where I hadn't yet.

I did not photo this phemon - as, like I said, I had already burned myself footling around with the camera and the flame. The design of the cell phone camera does not lend itself to single handed use, IMHO. I can take the picture with voice control - but I need to be able to tell it to zoom.
Anyway.

 I continue to be astonished at how much better some colours play with the raku type frit. This is quite lovely! The greys seem to be, by and large, very nice with raku.

 And here he is - pachyderm base with raku jitterbug frit, pachyderm for the horse, and intense black for the eye and mane. Quite a lot of colour streakiness going on.

Vetro 964 Pale Avocado Odd

Not to be confused with 991 Pale Avocado Pastel. I was excited to try 964 - as it appears to be a translucent caramel over a creamy core. I have to say - the extreme shockiness of it quickly dampened my enthusiasm.

You have to pre-heat this in the kiln to use it. Not even the rod warmer will help.

Not quite as exciting as I had hoped for. :-(

Vetro 967 Grey Quartz Odd Lot

Another Marbley colour. The name quartz might imply some translucency - but not so far as I can see in the colour.

It's a beigey grey'y colour with a darker core.



The texture of the rods I got is a little rough - just fyi. Again - just to help you ID that mystery glass.

 It stays fairly the same colour, and again, some brown and blue-grey marbling. You can see you get more of it when you work it and mash (the leaf on the left) vs the waves on the right, in which the glass get laid down in a more organized fashion.

Vetro 991 Avocado Pastel Marble Odd Lot

This is a light cream/ivory with a dark core, that develops a really nice marbling with hints of blue grey.

 I'm showing you the ends of the cut rods so that if you have it in your stash, unlabeled, you have a fighting chance of id'ing it.









It comes out a lot paler than the rod, but the marbling is a lot of fun.

Vetro 951 Candy Apple Red

What can I say - I have loved this red for a long time.

It is an easy striking, non-livering, dark, transparent red. Plain and simple. I will be sorry when it is all gone. 

Effetre 703 Mudslide

Mudslide is one of those colours that is a little variable depending on the heating and cooling and the areas that got the most heat just before you kilned it.

It also plays nicely with Raku frit. ;-)















Is it the colour of a Mudslide? Copyrights notwithstanding - you decide.

Effetre 756 Rogue

Rogue is a bit of a sleeper - what appears to be a straight, ordinary grey - turns out to have streaks of topaz and blue in it ...

 Lotsa frit 'n' stuff going on here too.

 Other side - makes a nice base ...

Definitely more interesting that you would suspect for those grey rods.

Vetro 961 Red Carrot Sparkle Odd Lot

Only slightly transparent - this another super intense, juicy orange. With a wider core than the Intense Tangerine.

Can't say that I noticed a sparkle - but I find that you need a much thicker build up for the sparkle to show than I have here. 

It's a super delicious colour tho'!
